Volume levels at a church service are a little like the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears: If it’s too loud the congregation gets frustrated and leaves. If it’s not loud enough, the congregation gets frustrated and leaves. If it’s just right, everyone, from the congregation, to the Pastor, has a worship experience where they can relax and not be distracted from the meaning of the message or the overall intent of the service. Music, by its very nature, is dynamic and contemporary music has power and punch. When presented properly, music can help create the environment. And when the Pastor speaks, he or she too is dynamic, often times going from a whisper to a scream. The mixer plays an important role, a balancing act, in maintaining a dynamic mix without making it too loud or too soft but keeping it just right. |
